March 5^th Tango-no-sekku

５月５日　端午の節句

As we celebrated “The girl’s day” on March 3^rd, we also celebrate boy’s day on May 5^th.We display Hinaningyo ( a special doll) on Girls day, but on Boys day, we have tiger dolls, an armor called“Yoroi”,a traditional Japanese military helmet “Kabuto” , and a sword to display.

３月３日に、女の子の成長を祝う「桃の節句」があったように、

５月５日には、男の子の成長を祝う「端午の節句」があります。

桃の節句ではお雛様を飾りましたが、

端午の節句では張り子のトラや鎧、兜、刀などを飾ります。

Also we raise carp-shaped flags outside houses on this day.The top one is the Father carp, below that is the mother carp and the child carp. All swim together under the big sky.

さらに、家の外には周囲に見えるように鯉のぼりを飾ります。

鯉のぼりは、上から順に

お父さん鯉、お母さん鯉、子ども達の鯉の順番で飾り、５月の大空の下を泳がせます。

Decorating an armor and a helmet is a traditional culture established in the Samurai society. You would think that these weapons are for battles, but actually they were the most important “Treasures” to save their own lives. Now we decorate them to protect our precious children from bad lucks, such as getting injured in a traffic accidents or catching diseases and so on.

さて、鎧や兜を飾ることは、日本の武家社会から生まれた風習。

鎧や兜は、“戦争のための道具”と受け取られそうですが、

武将にとっては自分の身を護る大切な道具であり、宝物でした。

今は、交通事故や病気から

大切な子どもを守ってくれるようにという願いが込められています。

Decorating “Koi-nobori”　started from Edo period among townspeople. Parents decorate “Koinobori” to wish their children’s future success.Carp is a very powerful fish which can survive not only in rivers but also in ponds and swamps. In China, it is said that the carp swam upstream, became a dragon when it reached to “Ryumon” waterfall and flew up to heaven.

また、鯉のぼりは、江戸時代に町人たちの間から生まれた節句飾りです。

川だけでなく、池や沼でも生きることのできる、生命力の強い鯉。

その鯉が急流をさかのぼり、竜門という滝を登ると「竜」になって天に登るという

中国の伝説にちなんだ、立身出世を願う飾りです。
